Engaging Students in Civic Values
A community’s health is connected to the public and private schools that educate its children. Schools when externally and internally well maintained add to the quality of life of their surrounding neighborhoods and to the educational experience of its students. When pupils are actively engaged in the maintenance and physical improvement of their schools working with mentors from the business community, they gain invaluable employment and citizenship experience while also being positioned as stakeholders in the future of their schools. Students engaged in the civic values of maintaining their schools’ property for the benefit of the overall community potentially will take those values with them as citizens.

Properties of Merit ™ Construction Companies are student led construction companies created within schools connected with one or more corporate partners. This creative, entrepreneurial and systematic problem solving approach applied to improving the quality of life for students and future citizens and the neighborhoods around schools is based on the work of a long standing program co-founded by Properties of Merit of Pennsylvania, Inc., Alvin H. Butz, Inc., and Allentown School District in Allentown, PA.

Mentors and Supporters
The Companies element of the Properties of Merit™ Program involves local companies that are willing to mentor student or youth groups as well as provide financial and/or other resources in support of the program.

In Allentown, a student-led and construction-contractor-monitored project was operated within the local school system to upgrade infrastructure and improve the physical plant of campus buildings. Students gained invaluable business experience, and improvements that are planned, designed and constructed by the students are less susceptible to vandalism.

Benefits
Corporate Mentors to POM ™ Construction Companies benefit by having their name associated with a project appreciated by students, educators and the overall community. In addition, corporate mentors contribute by training potential employees that will be in the workforce in the near future.

Students gain invaluable mentorship experience working with their corporate mentors. They also benefit from the excellent citizenship and civic value building experience of improving their school. In addition, with students as stakeholders, the improvements made to schools by POM ™ Construction Companies is much less susceptible to vandalism, of benefit to the school and school district.
